State Street Closed At Night Next Two Weekends for Streetcar Construction

Completion of the first phase of the Sugar House streetcar line is less than nine months away. A section of State Street will be closed to traffic in the evening for the next two weekends to accommodate construction of the streetcar crossing.

State Street will be closed to all traffic from Friday, April 19 at 8 p.m. until Monday, April 22 at 5 a.m. between Wentworth Avenue and Haven Avenue. It will close again on Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m. and reopen on Monday, April 29 at 5 a.m.

During construction local access to State Street will be allowed from 2100 South and I-80. Through traffic will be detoured to Main Street.

The Sugar House streetcar line will improve passenger connectivity while encouraging mixed-use development and enhancing the character of the surrounding South Salt Lake and Sugar House communities. The line will feature seven stations and will run from the heart of the Sugar House neighborhood to the Central Point TRAX Station in South Salt Lake where it will connect with the TRAX system. The line will be operational in December 2013.

UTA broke ground on the $55 million two-mile Sugar House streetcar line in May 2012 with a ceremony that featured United States Secretary of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The first modern streetcar project of its kind in the Salt Lake area, the Sugar House streetcar project has received a great deal of community support. The project is designed to transform the area into a model for a livable, sustainable community and is being built and funded under the direction of three partners: UTA, Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake.

700 East Sugar House Streetcar Construction

Sugar House Streetcar construction crews will work around the clock beginning Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. and continuing through Monday, Oct. 15, at 5 a.m. to install one of the project’s largest railroad crossings. During construction, 700 East will be closed to through traffic between 2100 South and Ashton Ave.

Local business access will be maintained during the road closure.

The work will take place on 700 East and approximately 2250 South.

During the road closure, construction crews will dig up the existing roadway and install new railroad crossing panels and asphalt. Crews will work in the 24-hour accelerated time frame to mitigate potential long-term impacts to motorists and businesses.

Get Your Superhero On At Black Cat Comics

Spider Man, Batman, and Iron Man, aside from being very man-centric what do these have in common? Superheroes, sure. Blockbuster movies, that too. But the origin of these and many other popular characters began in comic books. What’s that you say? You’ll see the movies but comic books are for kids. Nothing could be further from the truth.

At Black Cat Comics in Sugar House, easily accessible from UTA bus routes 21 and 213, you can find books for both kids and adults. If you enjoy superhero movies, come in and get a leg up on this summer’s blockbusters, there are countless books featuring Captain America, Thor and Green Lantern or if you are looking for something less in the mainstream you can find books about characters like Iron Fist, the Secret Six, Deadpool or Green Arrow. There are books based on popular fiction, video games, movies and television shows or classic tales like the Wizard of Oz.

Owner Greg Gage and his staff are very friendly and willing to help you find what you are looking for or make suggestions based on what you like. Black Cat also features a section devoted to all ages, kid appropriate comics in addition to toys and apparel. They are located at 2261 Highland Dr.

Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood Visits Salt Lake City

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood visited Salt Lake City October 27, to formally announce a $26M Tiger II grant for use on the Sugar House Streetcar Project.

Environmental and preliminary engineering has already been completed on the two-mile line that will travel on a historic railroad corridor (see photo below) between the 2100 South TRAX Station and McClelland Street, near 1050 East.

LaHood told the 100 or so gathered for the formal announcement that Salt Lake City was a model for future development.

“These new transit connections are helping to revive the same neighborhoods early streetcars once helped to create,” he said.

Following the announcement, LaHood joined more than 300 UTA employees and construction workers at UTA’s Jordan River Service Center.

There, he praised the effectiveness of the stimulus package, which has helped fund more than 14,000 transportation projects across the nation.

Dining on Route 21 Sugar House to the University of Utah

Route 21 runs from the Central Pointe TRAX Station up 2100 South to 2100 East. At 2100 East, it makes a turn north and heads to the University of Utah.

This route runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every half hour on Saturdays. Sunday service is limited.

There are dozens of dining options along the route – local favorites include Gandolfo’s, Millie’s Burgers, Original Pancake House, Sampan Chinese Cuisine, Salt Lake Pizza and Pasta, The Soup Kitchen, and the Dodo.

Or, you could check out The Blue Plate Diner located at 2041 South 2100 East, a mere 30 yards from a UTA bus stop.

The Blue Plate Diner serves breakfast all day long, lunch and dinner options after 11 a.m. The menu includes traditional American diner fare, supplemented with vegetarian and vegan options.

Credit cards are accepted at The Blue Plate. Menu prices range from $5.99 to $12.

We tried the Benedict Omelette ($8.99) and the Classic Reuben ($8.99).

But, what makes this place really special is the atmosphere. In the summer sit outside on the patio and enjoy the weather. In winter months, go inside and sit at the bar, or the more traditional tables and booths.
