Haggerman’s Bakery

Haggerman's Bakery

Located on South Temple just west of Main at 15 West South Temple, Haggerman’s Bakery is a great addition to downtown Salt Lake City. The location can easily be accessed from two TRAX stops and several bus routes.

Stop in for a delicious breakfast – the French Toast is great – or for a delicious sandwich made on bread baked fresh daily. Haggerman’s has a full menu, with meal prices that start at just over $5.

Grab a bite of a lighter sandwich chock full of veggies .

A grilled option with soup.

Or an amazing roast with au jus.

Every single sandwich? Delicious.

While you’re there, pick up one of the bakery’s freshly baked loaves of bread or a sweet goody for the road.

Haggerman’s has a second location in Draper, located just up the street from the 11400 South future TRAX station.

Be Safe Around TRAX – Editorial

Be Safe - Editorial

The following editorial appeared in the Deseret News Wednesday, July 27.

Be Safe Around TRAX

Utah Transit Authority is growing; we serve more people today than ever before.  We have successfully opened three rail lines and operated TRAX in Salt Lake County for more than a decade now. We will soon open two new lines, bringing service to neighborhoods that have never had TRAX service before. Our ridership is up nearly seven percent this year, and we expect to carry even more people next year.

With all this growth, one of our greatest areas of focus is on how to operate safely in these new neighborhoods.  I can speak for more than 2,000 employees when I say it affects every one of us when a safety incident occurs anywhere in our system.  We are proud of our excellent safety record, but we are always looking at ways to improve.  Our goal is to make our system the safest in the country.

We are always considering ways to design and engineer safer crossings. The right combination of safety features for each crossing—such as gates, bells, signals and signs—is critical in helping motorists and pedestrians know when a train is approaching.  Unfortunately, experience has shown engineering alone cannot prevent 100 percent of all safety incidents.

The only way to prevent all railroad crossing incidents is for people to take personal responsibility to obey all safety rules when they approach a railroad crossing.  In this respect, a railroad crossing is no different than crossing a busy street.  There are signals, signs and indicators in place to let you know when it is safe to cross, but they are only effective if you observe and obey them.

One area of concern is the growth in the number of incidents involving electronic devices.  Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists alike are increasingly distracted by cell phones, headphones, and other activities that inhibit awareness of surroundings.  Railroad crossing protections are only effective if you see the signs and lights and hear the bells and then respect them. Electronic devices should be turned off or put away whenever approaching a railroad crossing or station area.

Educating the public about train safety is a responsibility UTA takes very seriously. UTA partners with Operation Lifesaver, a non-profit organization that teaches people how to be safe around railroad tracks and crossings.  In preparing to open two new TRAX lines, UTA and Operation Lifesaver have been more aggressive in our education and outreach to school children, parents and the general public than ever before. We are committed to continuing those outreach efforts.

We are excited to bring new mass transit options to the Wasatch Front.  At the same time, we ask for everyone to take time to learn and obey train safety rules and help us teach them to others.

Here are a few train safety tips from Operation Lifesaver. More can be found at www.oli.org.

  • Never drive, ride or walk around lowered gates. Don’t cross the tracks until the lights have stopped flashing and it’s safe to do so.
  • Cross tracks ONLY at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings.
  • Don’t cross the tracks immediately after a train passes. A second train might be blocked by the first. Trains can come from either direction. Wait until you can see clearly around the first train in both directions.

Celebrate the Opening of the New TRAX Lines

Celebrate the Opening of Mid-Jordan and West Valley TRAX Lines

You’re invited to help celebrate the opening of the Mid-Jordan and West Valley TRAX lines with public rides August 3. These lines are the first two of five FrontLines 2015 rail projects to be completed. This will also be the first time UTA has opened two major projects at the same time – truly a cause for celebration!

The public rides will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until approximately 11 p.m.

The agency has partnered with the Utah Food Bank by doing a “Food as Your Fare” food drive. Riders boarding at one of the new stations are invited to contribute a canned food item as their fare.

The lines formally open for service on August 7.

Pioneer Day Schedule

Pioneer Day Schedule

To celebrate Pioneer Day, UTA is running an altered Pioneer Day schedule. Regular service will resume tomorrow, July 26.

Celebrate Hot Dogs with Da HotDog King

Celebrate National Hot Dog Day in Salt Lake City

Americans eat more hot dogs on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year, but did you know that today is actually National Hot Dog Day?! In light of the occasion, we are sharing our thoughts on Da Hotdog King – one of Salt Lake City’s newest streetcar vendors.

One stop at Da Hotdog King’s cart (usually stationed at 400 South and Main, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.), and you’ll quickly realize there’s more to this meal than a boiled hot dog on a bun.

Da Hotdog King’s creations run the gamut. From the signature Chicago dog, topped with yellow mustard, Chicago green relish, tomato slices, dill pickle spear, peppers & celery salt to the Picnic, filled with potato salad, raspberry chipotle sauce, real bacon bits and seasonings, these hot dogs are like no other.

The options are nearly endless, and they are all reasonably priced. Hot dogs start at $3.50, and you can get two for just a bit more.

We tried the Island Dog.

And the Kilby Court.

If you’re really interested in a deal, follow @da_hotdog_king on Twitter for specials, freebies and some great Salt Lake City tips.

The best part of this cart may be Troy, the actual Hotdog King. Troy comes to Salt Lake by way of Atlanta and Chicago and if you’ve got the time, he’s got some great stories to tell.

Families Enjoy First Public Ride

Families Board Train for Inaugural Ride

Some of Utah’s most successful social media professionals and their families enjoyed the first public ride on the new Mid-Jordan “Red Line” Friday, July 15 as a part of the Mom Aboard program.

The event – a bit of a press conference for bloggers – was planned to help share information about grand opening ceremony for the new Mid-Jordan and West Valley lines.

The event, at Historic Gardner Station, was attended by about 30 bloggers and 95 children. Each of the children were provided a gift bag with an engineer’s cap, a train whistle and some candy. Their parents received information about the new TRAX line to share with their readers.

Prior to accessing the platform, families were treated to a brief safety discussion that highlighted the following:

  • Be alert
  • Always expect a train is traveling down the track
  • Watch for trains in both directions
  • Cross the track at designated crossings
  • NEVER walk on or play around the track
  • Observe all safety markings and signals

Information was also shared more specific information about the opening of the Mid-Jordan and West Valley TRAX lines.

Following the remarks families boarded the train for a trip from Historic Gardner Station, to Daybreak Parkway and back – about 45 min. round trip.

This event is understood to be the first of it’s kind for a public entity in the State of Utah.

Carlucci’s Bakery

Carluccis

Carlucci’s Bakery is located in downtown Salt Lake City at 314 West 300 South, just a quick walk from multiple bus stops and the TRAX line.Carlucci’s opened in 2001, just prior to the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Since its debut, the location has been consistently recognized as one of the best bakeries in Utah.

Carlucci’s is about more than just baked goods though. They have a diverse lunch menu that includes a variety of delicious sandwiches on bread baked fresh daily, as well as colorful green salads and pasta.

The bakery is painted in a fun, deep blue, adorned with some really popping art and is well lit via the large windows.

Looking for a little snack on the way out? Try Carlucci’s Chocolate Decadence, a flourless cake bite for $1. You won’t regret it!

Have you been to Carlucci’s? What was your favorite menu item?

All Aboard with Mom Aboard

S70s

More than 25 local families are set to board UTA’s new rail cars Friday, July 15, to travel a portion of the Mid-Jordan TRAX line prior to its opening. The event is a part of the agency’s Mom Aboard campaign – a program for Utah bloggers.

The Mom Aboard event, complete with dozens of strollers and a few wheelchairs, will be a great test for the new train’s low-floor boarding. In addition, it will allow UTA to test the electronic boarding counters prior to its public opening the first week of August.

The general public will also have an opportunity to ride the Mid-Jordan and West Valley lines prior to official revenue service on Wednesday, August 3. Rides will begin at 9 a.m., and both lines will offer 15-minute service for the entire day.

As a part of the festivities on August 3, UTA is partnering with the Utah Food Bank to “let the food be your fare” that day; those boarding at one of the new stations on either the Mid-Jordan or West Valley line are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item.

Moms interested in participating in future Mom Aboard activities should contact Tauni at teverett@rideuta.com
